چکیده

In nembutalized cats intracellular potentials were recorded from hypoglossal motoneurons innervating either protruder or retractor muscles of the tonge (protruder and retractor motoneurons: P-Mns and R-Mns). Responses to stimulation of the hypoglossal nerve were explored and found to consist of an antidromic spike followed by an afterhyperpolarization (AHP) and a postsynaptic potential (PSP). When hypoglossal nerve stimulation was made with an intensity three times as large as the threshold for the hypoglossal motor fibers, the PSPs became evident under blockage of soma-dendritic invasion of the antidromic spike. In most of P-Mns or R-Mns, the PSPs were IPSPs, independent of the side of peripheral stimulation. The latencies were about 12 msec. Even when the cell membrane was hyperpolarized by injecting a hyperpolarizing current of up to 16 nA, the reversal point of the IPSP was difficult to find. In a small fraction of hypoglossal motoneurons the PSPs to hypoglossal nerve stimulation were EPSPs with latencies of 10 to 12 msec.

[Synaptic basis of cortically induced rhythmical activity of hypoglossal motoneurons in cats].

Synaptic basis of the rhythmical activity induced by repetitive stimulation of the masticatory area of the cerebral cortex was studied by intracellular recording from hypoglossal motoneurons in cats, with the following results: (1) Repetitive cortical stimulation induced rhythmical tongue movements coordinated with rhythmical jaw movements. After the animal was paralyzed, the cortical stimulati...

Changes in electrophysiological properties of cat hypoglossal motoneurons during carbachol-induced motor inhibition.

The control of hypoglossal motoneurons during sleep is important from a basic science perspective as well as to understand the bases for pharyngeal occlusion which results in the obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. In the present work, we used intracellular recording techniques to determine changes in membrane properties in adult cats in which atonia was produced by the injection of carbachol int...

Adventures and tribulations in the search for the mechanisms of the atonia of REM sleep.

1473 The Background Thirty years ago, the first report was published with intracel-lular recordings from motoneurons, trigeminal motoneurons, in chronically instrumented, behaving cats across the sleep-wake cycle. A major observation was that synaptic activity, both ex-citatory and inhibitory, declined during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep in association with the characteristic motoneu-ronal hy...

Differential involvement of perineuronal astrocytes and microglia in synaptic stripping after hypoglossal axotomy.

Following peripheral axotomy, the presynaptic terminals are removed from lesioned neurons, that is synaptic stripping. To elucidate involvement of astrocytes and microglia in synaptic stripping, we herein examined the motoneuron perineuronal circumference after hypoglossal nerve transection. As reported previously, axotomy-induced slow cell death occurred in C57BL/6 mice but not in Wistar rats....

Behaviors of hypoglossal hyoid motoneurons in laryngeal and vestibular reflexes and in deglutition and emesis.

Reflex responses of hypoglossal motoneurons innervating the geniohyoid (GH) and thyrohyoid (TH) muscles from the superior laryngeal (SLN) and vestibular nerves and their behaviors during fictive swallowing and vomiting were examined by recording both the extracellular activities of 11 single cells in the hypoglossal nucleus and GH and TH muscle nerve activity in eight decerebrate, paralyzed, an...
